Chess in the Schools
(Anywhere in the United States)
By DMV Chess
what is chess club?
Chess is an amazing game that teaches kids critical thinking, logic, and creativity. In our afterschool clubs, students will have the opportunity to participate in weekly chess lessons taught by an experienced coach. After the lesson there will be practice time where they can implement what they've learned. In Chess Club, we make sure every kid learns something new while having fun doing it! A typical club lasts for about an hour.
LOGISTICS
There is no maximum class size, because we can always hire addition instructors if needed. Chess club always meets after school at the same time every week. A typical semester of chess club lasts about 10 weeks, though we sometimes do 8-week or 12-week semesters. Students’ families pay a small per-week fee (collected at once) to cover the associated costs with running the club (sometimes this is paid directly by the schools if there is special funding available, but this is never expected.)
Where Can you start a chess club?
DMV Chess is an affiliate of the US Chess Federation, which means we work with thousands of chess coaches all across the country. Our extensive network allows us to establish afterschool chess clubs anywhere in the United States. We have liability insurance coverage, our coaches are background checked, and we are experts in swiftly obtaining certification/clearance for instructors.
About our Instructors
At DMV Chess, we make it a habit to only hire coaches who 1) enjoy working with kids and 2) have extensive chess-experience. Although this should be obvious, many other organizations hire coaches who are college students with little-to-no love for the game of chess or interest in helping kids. We will never do that!
Do you just work with Elementary schools?
Although we primarily work with elementary schools, we also start chess clubs in middle and high schools. From our experience, elementary school chess clubs are always able to get enough students, because there is extremely high demand for chess as an afterschool enrichment activity. During middle and high school, it can sometimes be difficult to get the minimum required number of students for an afterschool Chess Club due to the demanding homework load and other extracurriculars older kids have to deal with. Even if your school is a middle or high school, we would be happy to give it a try.
